Why Ingredient Literacy Matters
Beauty labels can read like a chemistry exam — long, unfamiliar words stacked in fine print. But the ingredient list is the most honest part of any product. Marketing copy is written to sell; the INCI list is regulated to inform. Learning even a handful of core terms helps you skip past the packaging and focus on what the formula will actually do for your skin.

Moisturizing Agents: Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives
These three categories form the backbone of every moisturizer. They work differently, and understanding the distinction helps you troubleshoot dry skin more precisely.
Humectant
An ingredient that draws moisture from the surrounding environment or deeper skin layers into the outer skin layer. Common examples include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and urea.
Emollient
An ingredient that fills gaps between skin cells to create a smoother surface and softer feel. Emollients include plant oils, fatty acids, and silicones like dimethicone.
Occlusive
An ingredient that forms a physical barrier on the skin surface to prevent water loss. Petrolatum, beeswax, and lanolin are classic occlusives.
Ceramide
A type of lipid that occurs naturally in the skin's outer barrier. Topical ceramides help reinforce a weakened barrier and reduce moisture loss.
Retinoid
A class of vitamin A derivatives used in skincare. Over-the-counter retinol converts to active retinoic acid in the skin; prescription tretinoin is already in its active form and works more rapidly.
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
Water-soluble acids — such as glycolic and lactic acid — that exfoliate the skin surface by loosening dead cell bonds. AHAs increase sun sensitivity and require diligent SPF use.
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
Oil-soluble acids, primarily salicylic acid, that can penetrate into pores to address congestion and excess sebum. Commonly used in formulas targeting acne-prone skin.
Niacinamide
A form of vitamin B3 with evidence for barrier support, sebum regulation, and improvement in the appearance of uneven skin tone and pore size. Generally considered low-irritation.
Peptide
Short chains of amino acids that can signal skin cells to produce structural proteins like collagen or elastin. Peptides are typically gentler than retinoids.
Antioxidant
An ingredient that neutralizes free radicals — unstable molecules generated by UV exposure and pollution — before they can damage skin cells. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (tocopherol) are widely used examples.
INCI
International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — the standardized naming system used on ingredient labels globally. Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration.
Non-comedogenic
A label claim indicating a formula is unlikely to clog pores. The term is not regulated or standardized; it reflects testing protocols that vary by manufacturer and does not guarantee zero risk for all skin types.
Most moisturizers layer all three types. A typical lotion might use glycerin (humectant) to draw water in, dimethicone (emollient) to smooth texture, and petrolatum (occlusive) to lock everything in place. If your skin stays dry despite moisturizing, check whether the formula is missing an occlusive — especially relevant in low-humidity climates.

Active Ingredients: What They Target and How
"Actives" is shorthand for ingredients with a measurable, targeted effect — things like reducing pigmentation, increasing cell turnover, or rebuilding the skin barrier. They're what separates a functional serum from a basic lotion.

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives. Retinol (over-the-counter) converts to retinoic acid in the skin; prescription tretinoin is retinoic acid directly. Both support cell turnover and collagen production, but prescription forms work faster and carry a higher risk of irritation. Start low and introduce slowly.
AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) — including glycolic acid and lactic acid — exfoliate by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface. They also increase sun sensitivity, so daytime SPF use is essential when incorporating them.
BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), primarily salicylic acid, are oil-soluble, meaning they can penetrate into pores rather than working only on the surface. Commonly used for acne-prone and oily skin types.
Vitamin C (most stably formulated as L-ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant that targets uneven tone and helps protect against oxidative stress from UV and pollution. It's notoriously unstable in formulas — dark packaging and low pH improve shelf life.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) does a little of everything: it supports the skin barrier, helps regulate sebum, and has evidence for reducing the appearance of enlarged pores and uneven tone. It's generally well-tolerated and pairs well with most other actives.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal skin cells to produce collagen or elastin. They're gentler than retinoids and suit sensitive skin, but evidence for dramatic results is more limited than for retinoids.
Ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin barrier. Topical ceramides help replenish a depleted barrier — relevant for people with eczema-prone or over-exfoliated skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant (see above) that draws moisture from the environment. In high-molecular-weight form it sits on the skin surface; lower molecular weights penetrate more deeply. It works best applied to damp skin.
