Fabric: Weight, Weave, and Fiber Content

Fabric quality has three dimensions: what it's made of, how it's woven or knit, and how heavy it is. Each affects how a garment wears and ages.

Fiber content is listed on the care label and tells you what you're working with—cotton, wool, polyester, linen, or a blend. Fiber type affects breathability, shrinkage risk, and how the fabric responds to washing.

Weave tightness determines how resistant the fabric is to snagging and distortion. Hold the fabric up to light: a tight, even weave with little light passing through it generally signals better durability than a loose or inconsistent one.

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). Heavier doesn't automatically mean better—a lightweight linen is appropriate for summer garments—but within a category, weight is a useful comparison tool. A t-shirt at 180–200 GSM will generally outlast one at 130 GSM.

Quick Fabric Check at the Store

Hold the fabric up to a nearby light source and look at the weave. A tight, consistent weave with minimal light passing through indicates a denser, more durable cloth. Also scrunch a handful of fabric and release it—fabric that springs back quickly with minimal creasing generally has good resilience, while fabric that stays crumpled may not hold its shape well over time.

Construction: Stitching, Seams, and Finishing

Construction is where most quality differences actually live. Two garments in identical fabric can have dramatically different lifespans based on how they were sewn.

Stitch density refers to the number of stitches per inch along a seam. More stitches mean a stronger hold with less stress on each individual thread. Fewer than 8 stitches per inch is a sign of rushed production; 10–12 is a reasonable standard for most woven garments.

Seam allowance—the fabric margin between the seam line and the raw edge—should be at least 5/8 inch on quality garments. Flip the garment inside out and check. Narrow allowances fray more easily, limit alteration options, and indicate cost-cutting in the cutting room.

Seam finishing refers to how raw fabric edges are treated to prevent fraying. Overlocked (serged) edges, bound seams, and flat-felled seams all indicate more investment than raw, unfinished edges left to fray with washing.

Look also at how pattern pieces align at the seams—stripes and plaids that match at seam joins require more precise cutting, which is a reliable marker of construction care.

Hardware, Linings, and the Details That Fail First

Zippers, buttons, snaps, and rivets are often the first components to fail. Inspecting them before purchase saves frustration later.

Zippers should run smoothly in both directions without catching. Metal zippers on stress points (like jacket fronts and heavy bags) generally outlast plastic coil versions. A zipper that hesitates or skips during a store try-on will only get worse.

Buttons should be firmly attached with a thread shank—a small loop of thread between the button and the fabric that allows the button to sit correctly when fastened. Buttons sewn flat directly against the fabric face are more prone to pulling through.

Linings in structured garments like blazers and coats serve a functional role: they reduce friction, help the garment hold its shape, and protect the outer fabric from body oils and perspiration. A partial or absent lining in a garment that would benefit from one is a construction shortcut.
